Open And Shut

There are some who say

when their other half is taken,

my heart has been cut out.

They keep the wound open,

seeing it as a window -- a way

to let the other back inside.

For them it is the suffering

in its ceaseless throbbing

that keeps the connection vital.

But others say oh no.

My other half is gone

but I will deny the knife

and keep my heart, for

in its ceaseless beating

there is the memory of love.

That is the vital connection.
