The stars are crisp and icy in a

clear black sky, but what I notice

most this morning is the sound

of running water coming from the

woods. What a rain we had yesterday,

a deluge of Biblical proportions.

I went to a Selectmen's meeting

last night – no agenda, just to

listen in to the business of my town –

and Big John from the road crew

was there, wearing a long day’s

growth of beard on his chin and

sighing heavily. All the culverts

on Hackleboro Road are holding...

barely....but he had to post 8 roads

as closed and Ayers has power lines

down. Trees and branches everywhere.

Expect a lot of overtime this month.

But the stars in their clarity portend

a drier day, and for that I am sure

the road crew, and town budget,

are thankful.

I for one will pull on tall boots

and go explore the streams

gushing through the new gullies

behind the house.
