There’s often a skinny fox
trotting down the road
by my house. Yesterday she
(and I always think of this as
a she-fox) was carrying a
large chipmunk home to her kits.
She paid me no mind as I slowed
the car to watch her trot,
to admire her catch.
Around the bend in the road,
where neither one could see
the other, shuffled an elderly
neighbor with her tiny
elderly dog. What would
happen when they met
on the roadside?
Here is the answer...
Eyes wide – old neighbor pauses.
Nose twitching – old dog pauses.
Skinny fox steps silently sideways
into the underbrush
and is gone.
